Grainau and its local area have many attractions – even for bad weather!

Here are some suggestions for our most popular excursions:

Zugspitz-Bahn

An absolute „Highlight“ for every visitor is a trip tot he top of the Zugspitze, Germanys highest mountain. There are 2 forms of transport up the mountain, a fast cable car and a slower cog wheel train which climbs the mountain in a tunnel. We recommend the 1 hour train up so that your body has time to adapt to the altitude difference, then a short cable car ride with the Gletcherbahn to the Summit. After enjoying the spectacular views from almost 3000m (9800feet) you can travel down with the Eibseeseilbahn, a cable car which holds several engineering world records after ist opening in 2017.

Eibsee & Zugspitze

The lake Eibsee is also known as the „Bavarian Caribbean“ due to ist crystal clear water with the water colours changing from light green to a deep blue depending on the depth of the water. The lake is ideal for a refreshing swim in Summer, or enjoy the picturesque 7km walk around the lake, a memorable walk whatever the weather is like. The lake also offers a round-trip on the electric boat „Reserl“ or get on a paddle boat and enjoy thr views and being your own captain!.

Mountain bike

Starting from Grainau there are almost an unlimited number of mountainbike tours on offer ranging from relativrly flat trails along the river Loisach to heading up into the mountains with long, steep challenging routes. If required ask for a guided tour or improve your skills with some technical training. If you do not have a mountainbike with you we are happy to assist you with a rental bike.

Höllentalklamm

Translated this gorge has the name „Hell’s Valley Gorge“. It is a spectacular gorge sliced through the rocks by the river „Hammersbach“ which comes crashing down directly from the Zugspitze glacier. Dramatic scenery and wonderful views , but be warned!, you will get wet whatever the weather! And please wear hiking boots as it can be slippy. The gorge walk starts approximately 5 min walking time away from the Hotel Post

Partnach Gorge

This gorge is in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and is suitable for families with children. The start point is the Olympic Ski-jump Stadium.

Minigolf

There is a small minigolf course in Grainau’s Kurpark. Good fun for young and old! Closed in winter.

Zugspitzbad

Whatever the weather you can swim and relax or build up your strength at Grainau’s Zugspitzbad. It is a wonderful bathing and leisure facility right under the Zugspitze. In glorious natural surroundings with views straight to the Waxenstein and Zugspitze mountains, it has many attractions for young and old, for singles, and especially for families. It is ideal for all who want to relax, to enjoy swimming, or to improve their fitness.

Ehrenberg Thermal Springs

Relaxing is a “must” on holiday, and there is no better place than the Alpine thermal springs at Ehrenberg! In the heated outdoor salt-water pool you have fantastic views to the surrounding mountains, and the sauna department meets every need.

The Ettal Monastery (Kloster Ettal)

The monastery at Ettal was founded in the year 1330. The basilica is open all day every day for visitors and those who wish to pray or take part in the religious services.

As a Benedictine community we live by the centuries-old disciplines laid down by the founder of our Order, Benedict von Nursia, who died approx 547 AD. In the year 1964 Pope Paul VI declared Benedict to be the Patron of Europe.

LINDERHOF CASTLE

A little jewel embedded in the forest oft he Ammer valley the „Schloss Linderhof“ is well worth a visit . This was King Ludwig 11 of Bavaria favourite castle, spending more time here than in any other . With a walk around the various buildings and surrounding park it is easy to see why he came back here so often. Please book in advance for a guided tour.

NEUSCHWANSTEIN
CASTLE

Copied world wide for movies and cartoons the famous „fairy tale castle“ was also built in the time of King Ludwig 11 . A must see when you visit Bavaria but can be busy, please book tickets well in advance.

MUNICH

The capital city of Bavaria is worth a visit and a nice option to have incase of bad weather. We recommend the train, it takes only about 1hour 20 mins and brings you right into the heart of the city. With museums, theatres, exhibitions and sporting events there is alwasy something happening in Munich or visit some of the world famous beer breweries .

Innsbruck (Austria)

Our neighbours, too, have much to offer. The provincial capital of Tirol has a charming historic centre with the famous Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl)

Swarovski (Austria)

The Crystal Factory in Wattens (Austria) is not far from Innsbruck and a combination visit is recommended for those who like shiny and sparkling items.

Highline 179

If you suffer from vertigo, this spectacular suspension pedestrian bridge is not for you. If not, this highlight is not to be missed! To reach it by car take the B 23 road for Ehrwald (away from Garmisch) which becomes the 187 at the Austrian border. After Lermoos take the 179 towards Reutte. After Heiterwang you will see signs for Highline 179 and Burgenwelt Ehrenburg. There is no need for the Austrian motorway toll (Vignette) for this journey.
